Hey garden friends! How is it May already??? The garden is growing like crazy now, but if you want to grow your own food and flowers all year round, there are still plenty of seeds you can sow this month.
If you haven’t already, you can check out what seeds I sowed last month here. Don’t forget to subscribe so you receive these lists every single month.
Now, onto the seed sowing.
The soil has warmed up and the frosts are few and far between, so if you’re short on space, most plants can be direct sowed outside now. I generally prefer to start most of my seeds off in cell trays as it keeps them more protected from pests when they’re small and vulnerable.
Sow indoors (these plants need a lot of warmth to germinate):
Courgettes/summer squash
Winter squash/pumpkins
Basil
Melons
Sunflowers
Cucumbers
Sow outdoors (or under cover for a head start):
Beans - french & runner (start off in small pots rather than cell trays)
Rocket
Lettuce (won’t germinate well if temperatures are too high)
Dill
Carrots (sow direct to avoid disturbing the tap root)
Parsley
Coriander
Radish (multi sow - I sow around 3 seeds per cell)*
Purple sprouting broccoli
Winter cabbage
Spinach
Cosmos
Spring onions (multi sow - I sow 5-7 seeds per cell)
Peas
Beetroot (multi sow - I sow 3-5 seeds per cell)
Fennel
Kale
Sweetcorn
Cauliflower
Parsnips (sow direct to avoid disturbing the tap root)
*For multi sown crops, you don’t need to worry about separating these later! Simply plant out the whole clump of seedlings, and they’ll push each other apart as they grow.
I hope this list helps you get on track for seed sowing this month! I’m going to be publishing these lists every month for free, but if you’d like more in-depth grow guides and seasonal recipes, maybe consider becoming a paid subscriber? 😇
