Seeds to Sow in April

All the seeds I'm sowing in my garden this month

Hey garden friends, welcome to my Seed Sowing Series! If you’re new here and want to know more about what I share in The Potting Shed, check out my intro post here for all the exciting details on what’s to come!

Spring has well and truly sprung! And with it comes so many possibilities of plants you can get started this month. First things first, I’m going to share with you everything I sowed last month, as all of these can still be started in April if you haven’t gotten them going just yet.

Seeds I sowed in March:

Start indoors

• Wild violets

• Echinacea

• Dahlia

• Cosmos

• Sunflowers

• Tomatoes & tomatillo

• Peppers

• Aubergines

• Cucumbers

Start in seed trays (in a cold frame, greenhouse or polytunnel)

• French marigolds

• Nasturtium

• Calendula

• Amaranth

• Peas (protect from mice!)

• Beetroot

• Swiss chard

• Spinach

• Salad onions

• Kalettes

• Mizuna

Direct sow

• Nigella

• Radish

• Beetroot

• Swiss chard

• Dill

• Lettuce

• First early potatoes

Seeds I’ll be sowing in April:

Start indoors

• Chamomile

• Basil & thai basil

• Luffa

• Courgettes, summer squash (end of month)

• Sweetcorn (end of month)

Start in seed trays (in a cold frame, greenhouse or polytunnel)

• Coriander (cilantro)

• Rocket (arugula)

• Borage

• Salad onions (succession, end of month)

• Kale

• Chives & garlic chives

• Parsley

• Purple sprouting broccoli

• Mizuna

• Chinese cabbage

• Cauliflower

• Leeks

• Beans - french & runner (end of month)

Direct sow

• Poppies

• Fennel

• Lettuce

• Carrots

• Radish

• Aztec broccoli

• Beetroot

• Maincrop potatoes

That might seem like a super long list but of course, they’re all optional! Feel free to pick and choose what works best for your space, and what excites you the most.

Pro tip: it’s always a good idea to stagger your sowings so you get continuous harvests throughout the year, and don’t overwhelm yourself with too many seedlings all at once!
